Racial tensions in the 1980s

The Olympics that took place in Los Angeles, the discovery of the wreckage from the Titanic, and the first celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. are a few positive events that marked the 1980's in America. Even though Americans came together to celebrate these events, America's issue with racism couldn't be masked - especially with the issues surrounding racism against African Americans and Jews. Racial injustices infiltrated the American system, especially with the police brutality against James Cody in 1983 and against Arthur McDuffie in 1980. This decade also marked the lynching of Michael Donald in 1981, and the chasing and killing of a young black man by a white mob in New York in 1986. Racial tensions in this decade continued to progress in ways that were slightly different from previous decades. The racist system affected different minority groups in different ways, but the racism they all encountered resulted in each of them feeling uncomfortable, shameful, and angry. In which these feelings continue to linger in today's society.
